Centrais is a term used in several Iberian languages, notably Portuguese and Galician, to denote central facilities or hubs. It is commonly applied to major infrastructure facilities that coordinate or supply services, including electrical power plants and telecommunications exchanges.

Electrical centrals, or centrals elétricas (centrales eléctricas), are facilities that generate electricity and inject it into the transmission or distribution network. They can be fossil-fuel, hydroelectric, nuclear, wind, or solar in origin. A central typically comprises generation units, fuel handling or energy storage, a cooling system, a turbine or generator set, and a switchyard with transformers and protective equipment. Control rooms monitor performance, regulate output, and ensure grid stability. The siting and operation of centrals are subject to environmental, safety, and regulatory requirements, and many are moving toward lower-emission configurations or decommissioning older units.

Telecommunications centrals, or central offices (centrais telefónicas), are switching centers that connect calls and data across networks. They originated with electromechanical exchanges and have evolved to digital and IP-enabled systems, enabling more efficient routing, interconnection with other networks, and advanced services. Reliability is maintained through redundancy, backup power, and secure facilities.

Other uses include logistics and service centers, known as centrais de abastecimento or centrais de atendimento, which coordinate supply chains or customer services. The term’s exact meaning is context-dependent, but it consistently denotes a central node within a larger system.
