Cavitation refers to the formation of vapor-filled cavities in a liquid. This phenomenon occurs when the local pressure in the liquid drops below its vapor pressure. The formation and subsequent collapse of these cavities are the defining characteristics of cavitation.

The process typically begins with a rapid decrease in pressure, which can be caused by a variety of factors such as high fluid velocities in a constricted area, or rapid changes in momentum. When the pressure falls below the vapor pressure of the liquid at its current temperature, the liquid begins to vaporize, forming bubbles or voids. Cavitation can have significant effects depending on the application. In some cases, it is an undesirable phenomenon. However, cavitation can also be intentionally utilized for beneficial purposes. Ultrasonic cleaning devices use high-frequency sound waves to generate cavitation bubbles in a cleaning fluid. The collapse of these bubbles provides a scrubbing action that effectively removes contaminants from surfaces. Similarly, medical applications, such as lithotripsy, use focused shock waves to create cavitation that breaks down kidney stones. Industrial processes also employ cavitation for applications like emulsification, mixing, and wastewater treatment. Understanding the conditions that lead to cavitation and its effects is crucial for both mitigating its negative impacts and harnessing its potential.
