Cash recycling, often implemented through cash recycling machines (CRMs) or cash recycling ATMs, is a banking process in which banknotes deposited by customers are validated, sorted, and stored for reuse in future transactions. This enables notes to be returned for withdrawals without requiring new cash shipments from central banks, improving cash availability and reducing handling trips.

In operation, a cash recycling system accepts deposits, counts and authenticates notes, sorts them by denomination and fitness, and stores them in secure cassettes. The same notes can later be dispensed for withdrawals, again after validation. Modern CRMs use sensors, imaging, weight, and other verification methods to detect counterfeits, damaged notes, or mixed currency, and they maintain a detailed audit trail. They may operate in conjunction with traditional cash-in and cash-out functions within bank branches or as standalone cash dispensing machines in retail or branch environments.

The primary benefits of cash recycling include decreased cash replenishment frequency, lower transportation and labor costs, improved cash availability for customers, and tighter cash control with better visibility into cash levels and flows. They also reduce the need for fresh cash shipments and can shorten branch cash handling times.

Security and risk considerations are central: CRMs require secure enclosures, tamper-evident seals, encryption, and access controls, along with routine maintenance to prevent jams and ensure reliable counterfeit detection. Regional adoption varies according to demand for cash, regulatory requirements, and the cost-benefit balance for financial institutions.
