Carrier-provided refers to goods or services supplied directly by a telecommunications carrier as part of a customer contract. In practice, it commonly describes equipment such as mobile phones, modems, or routers that the carrier leases or finances and provides to customers as part of a service plan, as well as network features and configurations delivered by the carrier, such as SIM cards, eSIM profiles, or provisioning of services. The term is often used to distinguish carrier-provided items from customer-provided equipment (CPE) or bring-your-own-device (BYOD) arrangements.

In mobile and broadband contexts, a carrier-provisioned device is typically pre-configured with the carrier’s firmware, settings, and applications, and activation is performed by the carrier. Provisioning may include setting up network features (VoLTE, roaming, data plans), applying firmware updates, and linking the device to the customer’s account. The carrier may also offer device financing, subsidies, or leasing, with ownership transferring to the customer after completing payment or upon contract terms.

Ownership and terms can vary: carrier-provided devices are often offered under installment plans or rental agreements, sometimes with the device locked to the carrier until conditions are met. Early termination or nonpayment may trigger penalties or device restrictions. Warranties and support are typically provided through the carrier as part of the service agreement.

The concept is frequently contrasted with BYOD policies, where customers supply their own devices and configure them to work with the carrier’s network.
