The primary function of careemollients is to restore and maintain the skin’s protective barrier. They achieve this through a combination of occlusion, humectancy, and lipid replenishment. Occlusives such as petrolatum and dimethicone form a protective film on the surface, reducing transepidermal water loss. Humectants like glycerin and urea attract and help retain water in the outer skin layers. Emollients, including oils and plant-derived fats, help fill gaps between skin cells and improve texture. Some formulations also include ceramides or fatty acids to support natural barrier lipids.

Common ingredients in careemollients include petrolatum, mineral oil, lanolin, shea butter, glycerin, and sometimes ceramides or cholesterol. They are formulated as fragrance-free options for sensitive skin and can be tailored for different skin types. They may be used as stand-alone moisturizers or as adjuncts to prescription therapies for conditions such as dry skin, atopic dermatitis, or ichthyosis, and are often recommended after bathing to lock in moisture.

Formulation considerations include the vehicle (ointment tends to be more occlusive and long-lasting, creams are mid-weight, lotions are lighter and more easily absorbed), storage, and compatibility with other treatments. Safety concerns are generally low, but possible allergies to ingredients like lanolin or fragrances exist.
