Carbeneligands, also known simply as carbene ligands, are a class of two‑electron donor ligands that coordinate metal centers through a divalent carbon atom bearing a pair of non‑bonding electrons. The carbon atom is formally neutral and carries a lone pair, enabling strong σ‑donation to the metal and, in many cases, π‑back‑bonding capabilities. Because of their strong donor ability and relative electroneutrality, carbene ligands are capable of stabilizing metals in high oxidation states as well as low‑coordinated or highly unsaturated complexes.

There are several major subclasses of carbene ligands. Fischer carbenes are electron‑rich aryl or vinyl carbenes bound to late‑transition metals; they possess strong σ‑donation and moderate π–acceptance, and are typically found in low‑spin complexes. Schrock carbenes, in contrast, are metal carbenes bearing 1,3‑diene or alkyl groups, often binding to early transition metals in high oxidation states; their π‑accepting nature makes them useful in alkene metathesis catalysts. N‑heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) are aromatic, saturated heterocycles in which the carbene carbon is flanked by nitrogen atoms; they are stable, σ‑donor ligands that have become ubiquitous in catalysis, including cross‑coupling and hydroformylation. Other variants include amidocarbenes, cyclic(alkyl)(amino)carbenes (CAACs), and metal–carbene complexes derived from transition‑metal catalysis such as Grubbs or Schrock catalysts.

Carbene ligands contribute significantly to the electronic structure of metal complexes, often lowering activation barriers for bond‑breaking and bond‑forming transformations. Their strong field can induce low‑spin configurations, influence metal–metal bonding, and modulate reactivity toward substrates. In industrial contexts, carbene ligands enable efficient olefin metathesis, asymmetric hydrogenation, and polymerization processes, making them a cornerstone of modern homogeneous catalysis.

Research continues to expand the library of carbene ligands, developing new synthetic routes, tuning electronic properties, and exploring their roles in photoredox catalysis, energy storage, and materials science.
