Electron-rich is an adjective used in chemistry to describe species or sites with higher electron density than a reference, typically due to electron-donating substituents or resonance. In organic chemistry, electron-rich sites are more nucleophilic and more reactive toward electrophiles.

Electron-rich arenes undergo electrophilic aromatic substitution at positions activated by donors; electron-rich alkenes and heteroatoms can form stable intermediates or coordinate to electrophiles. Electron-richness can be influenced by substituents (such as alkyl, alkoxy, and amino groups), resonance donation, and inductive effects. For example, anisole is more electron-rich than benzene because the methoxy group donates electron density through resonance. The concept is often contrasted with electron-poor or electron-deficient, where electron withdrawal by substituents like nitro groups reduces electron density.

In physical organic chemistry, electron richness can be discussed in terms of orbital energies (higher HOMO energy) and charge distribution; computational methods or qualitative reactivity trends are used to estimate it. In coordination chemistry and organometallics, ligands that are strong electron donors create electron-rich metal centers, affecting catalytic activity, back-donation, and oxidation state stability.

Examples include anisole, toluene, and amines as relatively electron-rich; nitrobenzene is electron-poor. Limitations: electron richness is context-dependent and can be offset by steric effects or solvent interactions.
