The term derives from Latin roots meaning “chief captain” and has appeared in multiple languages with regional spellings such as Capitão-general in Portuguese and Kapitein-generaal in Dutch.

In the Spanish Empire, the Capitán General was among the highest military ranks and often held broad civil powers as the governor of a major province or colonial region. These officers supervised both defense and administration, and in many cases acted as the monarch’s representative in the territory. The rank and its accompanying authority varied over time, but it commonly signified supremacy in military leadership within a given jurisdiction and sometimes served as the de facto head of government in practice.

Similar offices existed in Dutch and Portuguese colonial administrations, rendered as Kapitein-generaal or Capitão-general.
