A CanSat is a small satellite built inside a can-sized container, roughly the dimensions of a standard beverage can. The goal is to demonstrate an end-to-end space-system on a compact scale, including power, computing, sensors, data telemetry, and a simple deployment or descent mechanism such as a parachute to ensure a safe recovery after flight.

Typical CanSat designs include a microcontroller or single-board computer, a power source, sensors (pressure, temperature, humidity, acceleration, sometimes GPS), a radio transceiver for telemetry, and a small payload box. The can doubles as a rigid chassis. Designers emphasize light weight, compact packaging, modular components, and low power consumption, with robust interfaces and fault-tolerant operation.

Operation often begins with a standard launch platform, such as a high-altitude balloon or sounding rocket. After reaching altitude, the can is released, descends under parachute, transmits telemetry data during flight, and is recovered after landing. In some setups, ground teams use beacon signals or GPS to locate the resting can.

CanSats are widely used in education and research to teach systems engineering, programming, electronics, and data analysis. Numerous national and international competitions exist, encouraging teams to design reliable payloads, perform mission planning, and document test results while complying with safety and regulatory requirements.

Regulatory considerations include radio-band licensing, flight approvals, and compliance with launch-site safety rules. Reusability and rapid iteration are emphasized in many programs, enabling students and hobbyists to prototype, test, and improve designs within a single project cycle.
