The term is not tied to a single profession and is used variably to describe those who engage with canals in practical, administrative, or scholarly ways.

Typical canalists might work in construction and design, building and maintaining locks, gates, sluices, and water-control structures; engage in dredging and channel maintenance to keep routes navigable; manage towpaths and traffic controls; or participate in the governance of canal networks through public authorities or canal trusts. Boat crews and navigators who rely on canals for transportation are also commonly described as canalists, as are engineers, hydrologists, and archivists who study canal history, ecology, and heritage. Volunteers and members of canal societies often undertake restoration and preservation projects to conserve historic structures and traditional canal culture.

Historically, canals were central to inland transport in Europe, North America, and other regions from the 17th to the 19th centuries, driving industrial development and urbanization.
