Symptoms can vary depending on the location and severity of the inflammation but commonly include abdominal pain, cramping, diarrhea, and sometimes fever. Changes in bowel habits, such as urgency or blood in the stool, may also occur.

The causes of bélgyulladás are diverse. Infections, whether viral, bacterial, or parasitic, are a frequent culprit. Inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD), such as Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis, are chronic conditions characterized by persistent intestinal inflammation. Other potential triggers include certain medications, insufficient blood supply to the intestines (ischemic colitis), and allergic reactions. In some cases, the exact cause may remain unknown.

Diagnosis typically involves a medical history, physical examination, and various tests. These can include blood and stool tests to identify infection or inflammation markers. Imaging studies like X-rays, CT scans, or MRI might be used to visualize the intestines. Treatment for bélgyulladás is tailored to the underlying cause. For infectious causes, antibiotics or antiviral medications may be prescribed. For inflammatory bowel diseases, treatments often involve anti-inflammatory drugs, immunosuppressants, and lifestyle modifications. In severe cases, surgery might be necessary to remove damaged portions of the intestine. Nutritional support and symptom management, such as pain relief and hydration, are also crucial components of care.
