Bussning, or bushing in English, is a cylindrical bearing insert that provides a bearing surface inside a hole, separating a rotating shaft from its housing. It reduces friction and wear, accommodates misalignment, and can carry radial, axial, or combined loads depending on design. In typical installations the bushing remains stationary in the housing while the shaft rotates inside the bore; thrust bushings are used to support axial forces.

Common types include plain sleeve bushings, split bushings for easy installation, and thrust or flanged variants. Materials range from metals such as bronze and brass to steel-backed bushings, as well as polymers and composites (including PTFE and UHMWPE), and oil-impregnated versions that supply lubrication by capillary action. Bronze and sintered-bronze bushings are widely used for durability and heat dissipation, while polymer and composite bushings offer low weight, quiet operation, and maintenance advantages in lighter-duty equipment.

Lubrication and fit are central to bushing performance. The bore is sized to the shaft to create the intended clearance, and the housing bore may require an interference fit. Some bushings are oil-impregnated, dry or self-lubricating, or designed to operate with external lubrication. Design considerations include load type (radial vs axial), rotational speed, temperature, environment, and wear life. Life calculations often use bearing-life concepts to estimate service intervals.

Applications span automotive components such as suspension bushings and steering joints, industrial machinery, electrical equipment, and household appliances. Compared with rolling bearings, bushings generally offer lower cost, simplicity, and tolerance for misalignment, but may require lubrication and appropriate material choice to minimize friction and wear under demanding conditions.
