Buitengang, literally "outdoor time" in Dutch, is a term used in the Dutch correctional system to describe the scheduled period during which inmates are allowed to leave their cell or housing block to spend time outdoors. The activity takes place in secured outdoor yards or fenced areas and is supervised by prison staff; it is part of the daily regime that aims to support physical health, mental well-being, and social interaction among prisoners.

Access and duration depend on facility and security level; eligibility is determined by risk assessment and disciplinary history. New inmates may start with shorter, supervised times. Inmates under certain restrictions (disciplinary punishment, solitary confinement, high-security units) may have limited or no buitengang. During the outdoor period, inmates must follow rules: wear approved clothing, carry identification, remain under supervision, and refrain from bringing prohibited items. Devices like mobile phones are typically not allowed; smoking is generally restricted or banned during the outdoor period depending on policy.

In bad weather or security concerns, outdoor time may be shortened, postponed, or replaced with indoor recreation. The practice is governed by the Dutch Custodial Institutions Agency (DJI) and implemented through local facility policies, within the framework of national penitentiary regulations. Buittengang is regarded as an important component of inmate welfare and rehabilitation, balancing safety considerations with the need to provide physical activity, fresh air, and structured social interaction.
