A buffer tank, or buffertank, is an insulated vessel used in heating and cooling systems to store thermal energy as hot water. Its primary function is to decouple energy generation from energy demand, allowing heat sources to operate under steadier conditions while loads vary, which can improve efficiency and reliability.

Most buffers are steel- or stainless-steel-lined tanks with polyurethane or similar insulation. They can be designed to promote thermal stratification, using internal baffles or diffusers to keep hot water at the top and cooler water at the bottom. The tank is connected to a heat source (boiler, solar collector, heat pump, biomass boiler) and to the consumption circuit, and it may be integrated with an expansion vessel and safety devices such as relief valves and sensors.

Applications include domestic hot water buffering in solar or heat pump systems, primary/secondary piping optimization in hydronic heating, and storage for district or central heating networks. Typical capacities range from a few hundred litres in residential setups to several thousand litres in commercial installations. Operating temperatures vary by application, commonly around 60–95°C for space heating, with lower temperatures used for potable hot water when appropriate controls are in place to manage Legionella risk.

Benefits of using a buffer tank include reduced cycling of heat generators, improved heat source efficiency, faster response to peak loads, and better accommodation of intermittent heat sources such as solar or heat pumps. Design and installation considerations include correct sizing, ensuring effective stratification, appropriate pump and valve sizing, robust insulation, and adherence to local codes and safety standards. Regular maintenance should cover leaks, insulation condition, and verification of temperature and pressure safety devices, with proper measures for potable water to address health requirements.
