Bränsletanken (Swedish for "the fuel tank") is a container designed to store liquid or gaseous fuel for internal combustion engines, heating systems, and industrial processes. It supplies a regulated amount of fuel to the engine or system while protecting the fuel from contamination and limiting evaporation and emissions.

Modern tanks are made from steel, aluminum, or high-density polyethylene and may include internal baffles to reduce fuel slosh. Automotive tanks commonly integrate a fuel pump, level sender, filler neck, venting system and vapor recovery components. Stationary and industrial tanks can be larger, welded or bolted constructions, and may use double-walled designs for spill prevention.

Design priorities include structural strength, corrosion resistance, crashworthiness, and control of evaporative emissions. Safety features often include pressure-relief valves, rollover valves, anti-siphon devices and flame arrestors. Regulations govern construction, placement, venting and leak detection to reduce fire risk and environmental contamination.

Maintenance involves inspecting for corrosion, leaks, degraded seals, clogged vents and contaminated fuel; replacement of filters and adherence to proper drainage and disposal procedures are important. Environmental concerns center on soil and groundwater contamination from leaks, leading to requirements for secondary containment and leak monitoring in many jurisdictions.

Advances in materials, vapor control technologies and integrated sensor systems have improved durability and emissions performance. In alternative-fuel applications, tank designs are adapted to accommodate fuels such as compressed natural gas, hydrogen or biofuels, each with specific safety and material requirements.
