Brystimplantater, also known as breast implants, are medical devices surgically placed into the breast tissue or chest wall to augment breast size, restore breast volume after mastectomy, or correct congenital deformities. They are most commonly used for cosmetic breast augmentation.

There are two primary types of breast implants: saline-filled and silicone-filled. Saline implants are filled with sterile salt water. If a saline implant ruptures, the saline solution is safely absorbed by the body. Silicone implants are filled with a silicone gel. These implants are generally considered to have a more natural feel. In the event of a silicone implant rupture, the silicone gel may remain contained within the implant shell or leak into the breast tissue.

The placement of breast implants can be either subglandular (above the pectoral muscle) or submuscular (behind the pectoral muscle). Submuscular placement is often preferred as it may provide a more natural appearance and potentially reduce the risk of mammogram interference.

As with any surgical procedure, breast augmentation with implants carries risks and potential complications. These can include infection, bleeding, changes in nipple or breast sensation, asymmetry, capsular contracture (scar tissue tightening around the implant), and implant rupture or leakage. Regular monitoring and follow-up care are recommended after surgery. The decision to undergo breast augmentation is a personal one and should be made in consultation with a qualified plastic surgeon who can discuss the benefits, risks, and alternatives.
