Brystdiagnose refers to the medical evaluation used to determine the nature of a breast-related issue, with the primary aim of distinguishing benign conditions from breast cancer. The process integrates clinical assessment, imaging studies, and, when necessary, tissue sampling.

Initial assessment typically includes a medical history and a physical examination by a clinician. If a lump, skin change, nipple discharge, or pain is reported, further imaging is usually recommended to characterize the finding and assess for other abnormalities.

Imaging forms the core of diagnosis. Screening mammography detects many cancers before symptoms, while diagnostic mammography provides targeted views of a known abnormality. Breast ultrasound complements mammography, especially for distinguishing solid from cystic lesions and in younger patients with denser breasts. Magnetic resonance imaging may be used for high-risk patients, problematic cases, or to map disease before surgery.

When imaging suggests a lesion, a biopsy is often performed to obtain tissue for histopathological analysis. Techniques include core needle biopsy, vacuum-assisted biopsy, and, less commonly, surgical biopsy. Pathology reports determine whether the lesion is malignant, benign, or of uncertain malignant potential.

Common benign conditions include fibrocystic changes, fibroadenomas, cysts, and mastitis. Breast cancer remains the most attention-bearing diagnosis in brystdiagnose, but many abnormalities are non-cancerous. The diagnostic process may also consider pregnancy-related changes and inflammatory conditions.

Following diagnosis, care is guided by a multidisciplinary team and may involve surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy, endocrine therapy, or targeted agents, depending on the cancer type and stage. Regular follow-up imaging is often part of surveillance for both benign and malignant conditions.
