In Hungarian, bőrfertőzések, sometimes written without diacritics as brfertzések, refer to infections of the skin and its underlying tissues caused by bacteria, viruses, fungi or parasites. They vary widely in severity and can affect any age group. The condition is usually localized to a patch of skin but can spread if not treated, especially in people with weakened immune systems or diabetes.

Causes of skin infections include bacteria (for example Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus pyogenes), viruses (such as herpes simplex), fungi (dermatophytes causing ringworm and Candida), and parasites (notably Sarcoptes scabiei causing scabies). Infections can be superficial, affecting the outer skin layers, or deeper, involving subcutaneous tissues or hair follicles.

Common examples include impetigo (a contagious superficial bacterial infection with crusted lesions), cellulitis (a deeper infection causing redness, warmth and swelling), folliculitis (inflamed hair follicles), abscesses, tinea infections (fungal) and candidiasis in moist areas. Viral infections may present with grouped vesicles or blisters. The clinical presentation depends on the cause, location, and extent of involvement.

Diagnosis typically relies on physical examination and medical history; laboratory tests such as Gram stain, culture, polymerase chain reaction (PCR) or fungal and viral tests may be used to identify the pathogen and guide treatment.

Treatment is disease-specific, ranging from topical or oral antibiotics for bacterial infections to antifungals for fungal infections and antivirals for certain viral infections. Proper wound care, hygiene, and managing underlying conditions are important. Seek medical care for signs of spreading infection, fever, severe pain, non-healing wounds, or in individuals with diabetes or weakened immunity. Prevention focuses on good skin hygiene, keeping wounds clean and covered, and avoiding sharing personal items.
