Bremsestøtte, often translated as brake assist or emergency brake assist, is a safety feature found in modern vehicles designed to help drivers brake more effectively in emergency situations. Its primary function is to detect when a driver is performing an emergency stop and then automatically apply maximum braking force, even if the driver has not pressed the brake pedal hard enough to achieve this level of deceleration.

The system typically uses sensors to monitor the speed at which the brake pedal is depressed. If the system detects a very rapid depression of the pedal, which is indicative of a panic stop, it assumes the driver intends to brake as hard as possible. In response, the electronic control unit (ECU) of the braking system intervenes and supplements the driver's pedal pressure, ensuring that the anti-lock braking system (ABS) and electronic brake-force distribution (EBD) are fully utilized. This results in a significantly shorter stopping distance compared to what the driver might achieve alone.

Bremsestøtte is a passive safety system, meaning it does not prevent accidents but rather mitigates their severity by reducing the impact speed. It is often integrated with other advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) and is a standard feature in many new vehicles manufactured today, contributing to overall road safety.
