This narrowing, known as a stricture, can be caused by various factors including infection, injury, or previous surgery. The procedure involves the insertion of a series of graduated dilators, often called bougies, into the urethra. These dilators are progressively larger in size, gently stretching the narrowed area.

The procedure is typically performed under local anesthesia or mild sedation to ensure patient comfort. Before the dilation, the urethra may be lubricated with a sterile gel containing anesthetic properties. The dilators are inserted carefully and advanced slowly, allowing the tissues to gradually expand. The largest dilator that can be comfortably inserted determines the degree of dilation achieved.
