Bougiedilatatsioon

Bougiedilatatsioon, also known as urethral dilation, is a medical procedure used to widen a narrowed section of the urethra. This narrowing, known as a stricture, can be caused by various factors including infection, injury, or previous surgery. The procedure involves the insertion of a series of graduated dilators, often called bougies, into the urethra. These dilators are progressively larger in size, gently stretching the narrowed area.

The procedure is typically performed under local anesthesia or mild sedation to ensure patient comfort. Before the dilation, the urethra may be lubricated with a sterile gel containing anesthetic properties. The dilators are inserted carefully and advanced slowly, allowing the tissues to gradually expand. The largest dilator that can be comfortably inserted determines the degree of dilation achieved.

Bougiedilatatsioon can be performed as a one-time treatment or as a series of treatments over time, depending on the severity and nature of the stricture. Following the procedure, patients may experience temporary discomfort, burning during urination, or minor bleeding. In some cases, a catheter may be temporarily inserted to maintain the widened opening and aid in healing. The effectiveness of bougiedilatatsioon varies, and recurrence of the stricture is possible, sometimes necessitating further treatment or alternative surgical options. It is a less invasive approach compared to some surgical interventions for urethral strictures.
