Borrhålets, in Swedish usage, refers to a borehole or drilled hole in the ground. A borehole is typically created to access subsurface resources, obtain samples, or monitor conditions underground. Boreholes can be drilled or dug and may serve different purposes, from water supply and geothermal energy to geotechnical investigations and environmental monitoring. When a borehole is needed for long-term use, it is usually lined with casing to prevent collapse and to isolate the surrounding rock or soil from the interior of the hole.

Construction and design vary by purpose. Small-diameter boreholes used for monitoring or sampling often employ simple drilling techniques and may be left uncased or minimally cased. Production wells, geothermal boreholes, and deep exploration holes require more robust casing, cementing, and sometimes screens or filters to control flow and prevent sediment ingress. Diameters can range from a few centimeters to larger industrial sizes, and depths can extend from tens of meters to several kilometers, depending on geology and objectives. Drilling methods include percussion, rotary, and diamond-core drilling, with log data collected to characterize rock types, fractures, and groundwater conditions.

Maintenance and decommissioning are important for safety and environmental protection. Boreholes that are no longer in use are sealed with cement and backfilled, or properly abandoned according to regulatory standards to prevent contamination and subsidence. Environmental considerations include controlling groundwater contamination, managing produced fluids, and ensuring responsible waste handling. The borehole concept remains central to water resources, energy, engineering, and environmental sciences.
