It typically consists of drilling cuttings—rock fragments and soil removed from the bore path—and spent drilling fluids, as well as any contaminated soil or groundwater encountered during drilling. The exact composition depends on the drilling method (mud-based, air, or auger) and the geological materials being drilled.

Most boreavfall contains solids from cuttings and soils, but may also include drilling fluids, additives, salts, hydrocarbons, and metals. Drilling muds can carry residues of lubricants or polymers, and in some cases hydrocarbons or brines render the waste hazardous. Even inert cuttings can pose dust and physical hazards if not properly managed. Waste classification is typically performed to determine regulatory status.

Management of boreavfall follows the waste hierarchy: minimize generation, maximize reuse and recycling, treat on-site when feasible, and dispose of remaining material at licensed facilities.
