Boogers, also known scientifically as dried nasal mucus or rhinoliths, are a common bodily secretion. They form when mucus in the nasal cavity dries out, trapping inhaled particles such as dust, pollen, and bacteria. This drying process is a natural defense mechanism of the respiratory system, helping to filter the air before it reaches the lungs.

The mucus itself is produced by glands in the nasal lining. Its primary function is to trap foreign substances and humidify inhaled air. When this mucus encounters dry air or becomes overloaded with debris, it loses moisture and solidifies. The color of boogers can vary. Clear or white boogers typically indicate normal mucus. Green or yellow boogers may suggest the presence of white blood cells fighting an infection, though this is not always the case and can also be due to dehydration.

The act of picking one's nose, or mucophagy, is a common behavior, particularly in children, though it can persist into adulthood. While generally considered unhygienic, the health implications are usually minor unless the skin is broken, which can lead to minor bleeding or infection. Historically, boogers have had no significant cultural or medicinal use, remaining primarily a biological byproduct.
