Boilerist is a term used to describe a tradesperson who designs, fabricates, installs, maintains, or repairs boilers and associated pressure vessels. The term is largely archaic or regional; in modern usage, such workers are more commonly called boilermakers or welding tradespeople. A boilerist's work encompasses shop fabrication of steel sections, fitting and assembly of boilers, welding and riveting, and field services such as erection, piping, and commissioning of boiler systems in power plants, refineries, shipyards, or building services.

Typical duties include reading blueprints, cutting and shaping metal, welding (MIG/TIG), testing for leaks, pressure testing, insulation, and implementing safety systems. They also perform routine maintenance, inspect corrosion, replace worn components, and repair boilers to meet regulatory requirements and codes, such as the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code in the United States or equivalent standards elsewhere.

Training generally occurs through an apprenticeship or trade school, combining classroom instruction with on-the-job experience. Certification may be required for welding and for work on high-pressure vessels; many jurisdictions require compliance with health and safety regulations and the use of lockout/tagout procedures.

Work environments vary from industrial plants to construction sites and shipyards and can involve hazardous conditions, confined spaces, and high temperatures. The role has declined in some regions as boiler technology and automation have evolved, but boilermaker-like skills remain essential for installation, repair, and revival of legacy boiler systems.
