The bluebonnet is the state flower of Texas and is known for its vibrant blue color. There are actually several species of bluebonnets, but the most common and widely recognized is Lupinus texensis. These wildflowers are native to Texas and bloom in the spring, typically from March to May. They create spectacular displays of blue across the landscape, drawing many visitors to popular spots.

Bluebonnets are legumes, meaning they have a symbiotic relationship with nitrogen-fixing bacteria in their roots. This allows them to thrive in poor soil conditions, which is part of why they can cover large areas. The plant itself is an annual, completing its life cycle from seed to flower and back to seed within a single growing season. Seeds often require specific conditions, including scarification (scratching of the seed coat), to germinate effectively.

The plant has a distinctive appearance with its palmately compound leaves and the characteristic blue petals, often with a white or reddish tip. While Lupinus texensis is the most famous, other species like Lupinus subcarnosus, also known as the "dune bluebonnet," are recognized as state flowers as well.
