Most bloemisten shops obtain stock from flower wholesalers and growers and manage inventory according to seasons and holidays. The craft combines horticultural knowledge with aesthetic design, including color theory, balance, and technique. Arrangements can range from simple hand-tied bouquets to elaborate centerpieces and event decor. In addition to standard bouquets, bloemisten may offer subscription services, corporate floral programs, and decor for weddings, parties, and funerals.

In the Netherlands and Belgium, bloemisten shops are common in towns and cities and are often independently owned or part of a small chain.
