Blodpulsmål, often translated as blood pulse measurement or blood pressure monitoring, refers to the process of determining the pressure of circulating blood within the arteries. This measurement is a crucial indicator of cardiovascular health and is expressed as two numbers: systolic pressure and diastolic pressure. Systolic pressure represents the highest pressure exerted against the artery walls when the heart beats, while diastolic pressure is the lowest pressure when the heart rests between beats.

The measurement is typically taken using a sphygmomanometer, which consists of an inflatable cuff, a measuring unit, and a mechanism for determining the pressure. The cuff is wrapped around the upper arm and inflated until it temporarily stops blood flow. As the cuff is deflated, a healthcare professional listens with a stethoscope for specific sounds (Korotkoff sounds) that indicate the return of blood flow at systolic and diastolic pressures. Alternatively, electronic devices automatically detect these pressure changes.

Elevated blood pressure, known as hypertension, is a significant risk factor for heart disease, stroke, and kidney problems. Conversely, low blood pressure, or hypotension, can cause dizziness, fainting, and, in severe cases, shock. Regular blood pulse measurement is therefore recommended, especially for individuals with a family history of cardiovascular disease, those over a certain age, or those exhibiting risk factors like obesity, smoking, or a sedentary lifestyle.
