Bleheri, also known as Cardinal Tetra, is a small freshwater fish belonging to the family Characidae. It is native to the Amazon basin, specifically the Rio Negro and its tributaries in Brazil and Venezuela. Bleheri are popular among aquarium hobbyists due to their vibrant coloration and peaceful nature.

The most striking feature of Bleheri is their iridescent blue stripe that runs from the tip of their nose to the base of their tail. Above this blue stripe is a bright red stripe, which extends from the middle of the body to the tail. The rest of their body is typically a translucent silver. They are small fish, usually reaching a maximum length of about 2 inches (5 cm). Males and females are similar in appearance, though females tend to be slightly plumper.

In their natural habitat, Bleheri are found in slow-moving, blackwater streams and flooded forests with dense vegetation. They prefer acidic, soft water and are typically found in large shoals. In captivity, they thrive in similar conditions, requiring a well-planted aquarium with good water quality and subdued lighting. They are omnivores, feeding on small invertebrates, algae, and plant matter.

Bleheri are known for their schooling behavior and are best kept in groups of six or more individuals. This not only showcases their natural social dynamics but also helps to reduce stress among the fish. They are generally peaceful and can be kept with other small, compatible community fish. Breeding Bleheri in captivity can be challenging, often requiring specific water parameters and conditions to stimulate spawning.
