Bitumikastike, often referred to as bitumen emulsion or asphalt emulsion, is a stable dispersion of bitumen in water. It is a versatile material used primarily in road construction and maintenance. The process of creating bitumikastike involves emulsifying bitumen, which is a sticky, black, and highly viscous liquid, into water using emulsifying agents. These agents are typically surfactants that help to keep the tiny droplets of bitumen suspended in the water, preventing them from coalescing.

The main advantage of bitumikastike over hot-applied bitumen is its lower application temperature. This makes it safer to handle, reduces energy consumption, and minimizes the emission of harmful fumes. Bitumikastike can be applied at ambient temperatures, making it suitable for a wide range of weather conditions.

Its applications are diverse. It is commonly used for tack coats to improve the adhesion between asphalt layers, for chip seals and surface dressings to provide a wearing surface and protect the underlying pavement, and for slurry seal applications for pavement preservation. It is also used in dust control on unpaved roads and for waterproofing applications. The type of emulsifying agent used determines whether the emulsion is cationic or anionic, which affects its setting time and compatibility with different aggregate types. Once applied, the water evaporates, and the bitumen droplets coalesce, forming a durable, waterproof layer.
