The term "bitmap" refers to the way this pixel data is mapped in memory. When you zoom in on a bitmap image, you will eventually see the individual squares that make up the picture.

The quality of a bitmap image is determined by its resolution, which is the number of pixels per unit of area (e.g., pixels per inch or PPI). Higher resolution means more pixels, resulting in a sharper and more detailed image. Common file formats for bitmap images include JPEG, PNG, GIF, and BMP. JPEG is often used for photographs due to its efficient compression, while PNG is preferred for graphics that require transparency or lossless quality. GIF is typically used for simple animations and images with limited color palettes.

Bitmap images are created or edited using graphics software such as Adobe Photoshop, GIMP, or Paint. They are suitable for displaying realistic images like photographs and complex artwork. However, they can become pixelated or lose quality when scaled up significantly because the software has to invent new pixel data, which can lead to a blurry or blocky appearance. Therefore, bitmap images are generally not ideal for graphics that need to be resized frequently, such as logos or illustrations that will be used in various sizes.
