Bioptens is a term used to describe a proposed class of devices and materials that couple biological processes with optical readout or control. The concept is still emerging, with definitions varying across fields. In general, bioptens encompass biocompatible systems that can either report biological states through light signals or use light to influence biological activity, within cellular, tissue, or organismal contexts.

Mechanisms typically fall into two categories. In transduction-based bioptens, biological events trigger photon emission or changes in optical properties, using reporters such as fluorescent proteins or luminescent enzymes. In optically actuated bioptens, light directly modulates biological processes through optogenetic, photothermal, or photochemical effects.

Common components include bioreceptors, genetic modules, luminescent or fluorescent reporters, nanomaterials, and integrated light sources or detectors. The aim is to create interfaces that are sensitive, specific, and minimally invasive, capable of ongoing readout or control within living systems.

Applications are speculative but include real-time medical diagnostics, implantable sensing, guided therapy, and environmental monitoring. The field faces challenges related to biocompatibility, stability in physiological conditions, data interpretation, and regulatory pathways, and there is no universally adopted standard for what constitutes a biopten.
