Bioeffects are the observable biological changes in living organisms produced by exposure to physical, chemical, or biological agents. They can occur at molecular, cellular, tissue, or whole-organism levels and may be detected as changes in physiology, biochemistry, or behavior.

Agents causing bioeffects are diverse: physical factors such as ionizing radiation, ultraviolet light, and electric or magnetic fields; chemical factors such as toxins, drugs, pollutants, or nutrients; and biological factors such as pathogens, vaccines, or biotechnological products.

Bioeffects can be beneficial or harmful depending on exposure context. Therapeutic uses exploit positive bioeffects (for example, certain wavelengths of light or specific drug doses), while harmful bioeffects include toxicity, genotoxicity, and carcinogenic risk from excessive or inappropriate exposure. Dose, duration, frequency, and individual susceptibility influence outcomes.

Mechanisms underlying bioeffects include direct molecular interactions, DNA damage and repair, oxidative stress, inflammation, and altered signaling pathways. Endpoints studied range from cell viability and mutations to tissue injury, developmental effects, immune responses, and behavioral changes.

Research methods span in vitro assays, animal studies, epidemiological analyses, and computational modeling. Bioeffects data inform safety assessments, exposure limits, medical therapies, and regulatory decision making to minimize risk while harnessing beneficial effects.
