Bilstyring is the system by which a driver directs the course of a motor vehicle by turning the steering wheel. The term is used in Scandinavian languages to refer to car steering and its associated mechanisms. The steering system translates rotational input from the driver into the turning of the front wheels and provides feedback that helps the driver sense road conditions.

The core components typically include the steering wheel, steering column, steering gearbox (commonly rack-and-pinion or recirculating-ball), and tie rods connected to the wheels. In modern vehicles, this mechanical link is supplemented or replaced by power-assist systems to reduce effort and improve control.

Power assistance comes in several forms. Manual steering requires no assist. Hydraulic power steering uses a pump and fluid pressure to aid turning, reducing effort and providing road feel but adding parasitic engine load. Electric power steering uses an electric motor to provide variable assist, improving efficiency and allowing integration with vehicle stability control and adaptive steering modes. Some systems combine hydraulic and electric elements for performance and efficiency advantages.

Advances in steering technology include variable-ratio steering, which changes the steering feel at different speeds, and steer-by-wire concepts that replace a direct mechanical link with electronic control. Modern systems are closely integrated with safety technologies such as electronic stability control, lane-keeping assist, and parking aids. Maintenance considerations cover wheel alignment, wear of steering components, hydraulic fluid condition, and the health of EPS motors or sensors.

Historically, hydraulic power steering appeared in the mid-20th century (notably in the early 1950s), followed by widespread adoption of electric assist in recent decades. Bilstyring remains a central aspect of vehicle handling, safety, and driveability.
