Bilayerembedded is a term used to describe the integration of a bilayer structure—two closely coupled thin layers—into a host material, such that the layers remain intact while interacting with the surrounding matrix or substrate. The concept is used primarily in materials science and nanoengineering, where layered two-dimensional materials are incorporated to form bilayer heterostructures embedded in polymers, ceramics, or composites.

In practice, bilayerembedded refers to constructing a bilayer within a matrix so that each layer contributes its intrinsic properties while the embedding medium provides support and additional functionality. Common materials for the bilayer include two-dimensional materials such as graphene, hexagonal boron nitride, or transition metal dichalcogenides. The embedding can enhance mechanical reinforcement, control diffusion or barrier properties, and tailor electronic or optical responses.

Properties and applications of bilayerembedded structures span anisotropic mechanical performance, tunable electronic and optical behavior, and improved barrier or catalytic properties. Potential applications include flexible electronics, energy storage electrodes, protective coatings, and filtration or separation membranes. As research advances, bilayerembedded approaches aim to harness interfacial coupling between the bilayer and matrix to create multifunctional materials.
