Bihulebetændelse, also known as sinusitis, is an inflammation or swelling of the tissue lining the sinuses. Sinuses are hollow spaces within the skull, connected to the nasal cavity. When these passages become blocked, mucus can build up, creating an environment where viruses, bacteria, or fungi can grow.

The most common cause of sinusitis is a viral infection, often a cold. However, bacterial infections can also lead to sinusitis, sometimes as a secondary infection following a viral illness. Allergic reactions and fungal infections are less common causes.

Symptoms of bihulebetændelse can vary but typically include nasal congestion, thick, discolored nasal discharge, facial pain or pressure, and reduced sense of smell. Other symptoms may include headache, toothache, cough, sore throat, and fatigue. The pain is often felt in the forehead, cheeks, or around the eyes.

Diagnosis is usually made based on symptoms and a physical examination. In some cases, imaging tests like X-rays or CT scans may be used to assess the severity or identify complications.

Treatment depends on the cause and severity. For viral sinusitis, which is the most frequent type, treatment focuses on relieving symptoms with decongestants, pain relievers, and nasal saline rinses. Antibiotics are not effective against viral infections. For bacterial sinusitis, a course of antibiotics may be prescribed. Antihistamines and corticosteroids can help manage symptoms related to allergies. In chronic or recurrent cases, further investigation and treatment might be necessary.
