Bihåleinflammation, also known as sinusitis, is an inflammation of the mucous membranes lining the paranasal sinuses. These air-filled cavities are located in the bones of the face around the nose, forehead, and eyes. When the sinus openings become blocked, mucus can accumulate, creating an environment conducive to infection and inflammation.

The most common causes of sinusitis are viral infections, such as the common cold. Bacterial infections can also cause sinusitis, often developing as a secondary infection after a viral illness. Other contributing factors include allergies, nasal polyps, and a deviated septum, which can impede proper sinus drainage.

Symptoms of sinusitis typically include facial pain or pressure, nasal congestion, a runny nose, and reduced sense of smell. Other symptoms may include headache, fever, cough, and fatigue. The pain is often worse when bending over or lying down.

Diagnosis is usually based on a medical history and physical examination. In some cases, imaging tests like X-rays, CT scans, or MRIs may be used to visualize the sinuses and assess the extent of the inflammation.

Treatment for sinusitis depends on the underlying cause and severity. Viral sinusitis often resolves on its own and may be managed with over-the-counter pain relievers and nasal decongestants. For bacterial sinusitis, antibiotics may be prescribed. Allergy treatments, such as antihistamines and nasal corticosteroids, can help manage sinusitis related to allergies. In cases with anatomical obstructions like nasal polyps or a deviated septum, surgical intervention may be considered.
