Besætningen is a Danish term that refers to the group of people assigned to operate and maintain a vessel, aircraft, or installation. In maritime contexts it denotes the ship’s crew or complement—the personnel on board responsible for navigation, operation, maintenance, service, and safety.

A ship’s besætningen typically includes officers (such as the master and deck officers), engineers and engine-room staff, ratings in the deck and engine departments, and catering or hotel staff on passenger ships. The exact composition and size depend on vessel type, service, and flag state. On commercial ships, functions are divided among navigation, propulsion and power, safety, and service tasks, with specific roles defined by job titles and certification requirements.

Regulation and training form a key part of besætningen. Manning levels and qualifications are governed by national maritime law and international conventions, notably the STCW Convention and SOLAS. Seafarers must hold appropriate certificates, undergo medical fitness assessments, and comply with working hours and rest requirements. The ship’s master bears overall responsibility for safety, compliance, and day-to-day command.

Historically, ships carried large crews due to the labor demands of sailing, maintenance, and cargo handling. Advances in technology and automation have reduced crew sizes on modern vessels, but a trained and certified besætningen remains essential for safety, efficiency, and service.

In broader usage, the term can also be applied to staff of other enclosed operations, though its strongest association is with seafaring.
