Benkontinuitet refers to the state where bone tissue is not continuously formed or resorbed. This typically occurs when there is a disruption in the normal bone remodeling process. Bone remodeling is a lifelong process where mature bone tissue is removed from the skeleton (a process called bone resorption) and new bone tissue is formed (a process called bone formation). This process is essential for maintaining bone strength, repairing microdamage, and adapting to mechanical stress.

When benkontinuitet is present, there is a lack of seamless integration between the old and new bone. This can manifest in several ways. For example, during bone healing after a fracture, a period of inactivity or insufficient cellular activity might lead to a gap or discontinuity in the bone callus, preventing a robust and complete union. In the context of bone diseases, benkontinuitet can signify impaired osteoblastic activity (bone-forming cells) or excessive osteoclastic activity (bone-resorbing cells), leading to weakened bone structure.

Conditions associated with benkontinuitet can include certain types of osteogenesis imperfecta, where bone is abnormally brittle, or metabolic bone disorders that affect the balance of bone turnover. Radiographically, benkontinuitet might appear as a radiolucent line or a clear demarcation between bone segments that should be unified.
