Beeldpixels, often referred to as image pixels or simply pixels, are the smallest addressable elements in a raster image. They are the fundamental building blocks of digital images displayed on screens or printed. Each pixel is a tiny point of color, and the arrangement and color values of millions of these pixels create the entire image we see.

The term "pixel" is a portmanteau of "picture element." In digital imaging, pixels are arranged in a grid. The resolution of an image is determined by the number of pixels it contains, typically expressed as width by height (e.g., 1920x1080 pixels). A higher resolution means more pixels, which generally translates to a more detailed and sharper image.

Each pixel has a specific color value. This value is often represented numerically, such as using RGB (Red, Green, Blue) values, where a combination of these three primary colors determines the final hue, saturation, and brightness of the pixel. For example, pure red might be (255, 0, 0) in RGB, while black is (0, 0, 0) and white is (255, 255, 255). Alpha channels can also be associated with pixels to control their transparency.

The size of a pixel is not fixed; it depends on the display device's resolution and screen size. On a high-resolution display, individual pixels may be too small to discern, creating a seamless image. Conversely, on lower-resolution displays or when zooming into an image excessively, individual pixels become visible, leading to a blocky or pixelated appearance.
