Beatmungsmaßnahmen, also known as respiratory support or ventilation, refers to medical interventions designed to assist or replace the body's natural breathing process. These measures are employed when an individual is unable to breathe adequately on their own due to illness, injury, or medical conditions affecting the respiratory system or overall physiology.

The primary goal of beatmungsmaßnahmen is to ensure sufficient oxygenation of the blood and removal of carbon dioxide from the body. This can be achieved through various methods, ranging from non-invasive techniques to highly invasive ones. Non-invasive ventilation, such as continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) or bilevel positive airway pressure (BiPAP), delivers air or oxygen through a mask fitted snugly over the nose or nose and mouth. This helps to keep the airways open and improve breathing effort.

Invasive ventilation typically involves mechanical ventilation, where a machine called a ventilator takes over or assists with breathing. This requires intubation, where a tube is inserted into the trachea (windpipe) or a tracheostomy is performed, creating a direct opening into the airway. The ventilator then delivers breaths, controlling their rate, volume, and pressure.

Beatmungsmaßnahmen are critical in managing acute respiratory failure, severe pneumonia, sepsis, trauma, and during surgical procedures requiring anesthesia. The specific type and duration of ventilation are determined by the patient's condition, underlying cause of respiratory distress, and response to treatment. Close monitoring of vital signs, blood gas levels, and lung function is essential during any form of respiratory support. The ultimate aim is to support breathing until the patient's own respiratory function recovers sufficiently.
