A battery module is a fundamental building block in a larger battery pack. It consists of several individual battery cells that are electrically connected and housed within a protective casing. These modules are designed to be combined in series and/or parallel to achieve the desired voltage and capacity for a specific application. The arrangement of cells within a module and the modular design of the overall battery pack allow for scalability, making it easier to customize battery systems for various needs.

The primary function of a battery module is to consolidate multiple cells into a manageable unit. This simplifies the assembly and maintenance of larger battery systems. Within a module, cells are typically connected in series to increase the overall voltage, and multiple modules can then be connected in series or parallel to create a battery pack with the required voltage and energy storage capacity. Modern battery modules often incorporate integrated Battery Management System (BMS) components or are designed to easily interface with a centralized BMS. This BMS monitors parameters such as voltage, temperature, and state of charge for each cell or group of cells, ensuring safe and efficient operation, preventing overcharging or deep discharging, and prolonging the battery's lifespan.

Battery modules are commonly found in electric vehicles, renewable energy storage systems, uninterruptible power supplies (UPS), and portable electronics. Their standardized nature facilitates manufacturing, repair, and replacement, contributing to the overall cost-effectiveness and reliability of battery technology. The design of battery modules also considers thermal management, with provisions for cooling or heating to maintain optimal operating temperatures.
