It generally refers to a social structure where individuals primarily interact and form strong bonds within their immediate peer group or band. This concept is often applied in anthropological contexts to describe small, mobile hunter-gatherer groups that characterized much of early human history.

In bandsamhällen, social organization is typically egalitarian. Leadership roles, if present, are often informal and based on personal skills or charisma rather than inherited status. Decision-making usually occurs through consensus. The band serves as the primary unit for subsistence activities, such as hunting, gathering, and resource sharing, as well as for social reproduction and mutual support.

Membership in these bands can be fluid, with individuals or families sometimes moving between groups based on kinship ties, marriage alliances, or resource availability. This flexibility allows bandsamhällen to adapt to changing environmental conditions and maintain social networks across a wider territory. The emphasis is on close personal relationships and reciprocal obligations within the group.
