Baglyok is the Hungarian term for owls, a diverse group of birds of prey in the order Strigiformes. They are found worldwide except Antarctica and inhabit forests, deserts, grasslands, and urban areas. The order comprises two families: Tytonidae, the barn owls, and Strigidae, the typical owls.

Owls have rounded or heart-shaped facial discs that help funnel sound, forward-facing eyes, and highly developed hearing and night vision. Most species are nocturnal or crepuscular. Their feathers are specialized for silent flight, enabling stealthy hunting. They have strong talons and a reversible toe for grasping prey.

Ecology and behavior: Owls hunt a variety of prey, commonly small mammals such as rodents, but also birds, insects, and fish in some species. They use vocalizations, including hoots, screeches, or whistles, to communicate and mark territory. Nesting sites vary: tree cavities, abandoned nests, or ledges; most species lay a small clutch of eggs.

Reproduction and development: Eggs are incubated by one or both parents; chicks hatch and fledge after several weeks to months, depending on species. Parent birds feed fledglings until independence.

Conservation and human relevance: Some owl species are threatened by habitat loss, pesticide use, and human disturbance. Owls play a crucial role in controlling rodent populations. They are often featured in folklore and can serve as indicators of ecosystem health.
