Bagatell is a term used in Danish and Norwegian to denote something of little importance—a trifling matter or trivial detail. In other languages, the closely related spelling bagatelle (French) or bagatell forms carry a similar sense of lightness or insignificance. The word derives from the French bagatelle, meaning “a trifle,” which itself traces to Italian bagatella.

In music, a bagatelle is a short, light piece, often charming or playful. The form has appeared since the Classical era. The best-known bagatelles are by Ludwig van Beethoven—his Op. 33, Op. 119, and Op. 126 sets—with “Für Elise” commonly published as a bagatelle. The term is also applied to similar miniature works by other composers, and it remains a generic label for light, characterful musical sketches.

Beyond music, bagatelle describes any trivial matter or minor concern in everyday language. It can appear in literature and discourse to label details judged as inconsequential or easily dismissed, contrasting with weightier topics or issues.

Historically, bagatelle also referred to a parlor game and mechanical amusement, a predecessor to pinball played on an inclined table with pegs and balls. The term survives in modern usage primarily as a description of brief musical pieces or trifling matters, though its historical associations with playful entertainment linger in cultural memory.
