axonihävim

Axonihävim is a term used in speculative neuroscience and science fiction to describe a hypothetical process in which axons abruptly lose functional integrity, resulting in a rapid, localized failure of action potential conduction. The name combines axon with the Finnish root hävi-, to disappear or vanish, highlighting the sudden nature of the phenomenon rather than slow degeneration.

In theoretical accounts, axonihävim is considered a functional rather than a strictly structural defect. Proposed mechanisms are speculative and include rapid cytoskeletal disassembly, sudden energy or ionic imbalance causing collapse of membrane potentials, impaired axonal transport, calcium dysregulation, and membrane instability that blocks signal propagation without overt demyelination or transection. In such models, the affected segment may appear anatomically intact but becomes electrically silent.

Observations described in simulations or fiction depict a sharp, localized drop in conduction within a limited axonal length. Reversibility is variable, depending on the duration and extent of disturbance; some scenarios allow transient restoration, others imply permanent loss of function in the compromised segment. There is usually an absence of visible demyelination or severed axons, distinguishing axonihävim from common injury patterns.

Relation to real phenomena is mainly analogical. Axonihävim is not an established medical diagnosis or widely accepted mechanism; it serves as a thought experiment to explore abrupt failure modes in neuronal networks.
