Avfallsposer, often translated as trash bags or bin bags, are bags used to contain waste for safe handling and disposal. The term is common in Swedish and Norwegian, and in many contexts refers to bags used in households, offices, and public spaces. They come in a range of materials, sizes, and closures to suit different waste streams and bin sizes.

Most avfallsposer are made from polyethylene, typically low-density (LDPE) or linear low-density (LLDPE), with higher-strength variants in thicker gauges for heavy or sharp waste. Some bags use HDPE for added stiffness. In recent years, there are also compostable or biodegradable options made from biopolymers such as PLA blends or starch-based formulations. These are often labeled with certifications indicating suitability for industrial or home composting, under standards such as EN 13432, OK compost, ASTM D6400, or BPI.

Sizes and closures vary widely. Kitchen bags are commonly around 5–15 liters, while general household bags range from 40–60 liters, and larger bags for industrial or outdoor use can reach 90–120 liters. Closures include drawstrings, slip-tops, or simple knot closures. Some bags feature odor-control additives, puncture resistance, or gusseted construction to improve capacity and strength.

Environmental considerations include how the bags are disposed of and whether they are recyclable in local streams. Many plastic avfallsposer cannot be recycled curbside and should be placed in general waste unless local programs accept them. Compostable bags require appropriate composting facilities to break down. Consumers are advised to follow local guidelines and consider reusable alternatives where feasible.
