The underlying source of avapäätteiset forms is the present active participle pattern in Finnish. By attaching -va or -vä to the stem of a verb, speakers create adjectives that express ongoing action or a property related to the verb’s meaning. For example, avaava is derived from avata (to open) and can mean “opening” or “one that opens,” as in avaava ovi (an opening/that opens door). Näyttävä, from näyttää (to show), is another common avapäätteinen form meaning “showy” or “prominent.” These forms can be used attributively before a noun (avaava ovi) or predicatively (ovi on avava).

In usage, avapäätteisten adjectives decline like ordinary Finnish adjectives for number and case, so they agree with the noun they modify. Their presence in a sentence often conveys temporal or aspectual nuance by tying the description to an action rather than to a static property alone. The class also includes other verbs-derived forms with the same -va/-vä ending, produced through standard stem modification rules and vowel harmony.

Avapäätteinen is primarily a name used by grammars and linguists to categorize these verb-derived descriptors. It is less common in everyday speech, where speakers may simply call them participles or adjectives formed with the -va/-vä suffix.
