Autorickshaw, also called auto rickshaw, auto, or three-wheeler, is a motorised vehicle with three wheels, an engine and a small enclosed cabin. It is designed to carry one to three passengers and a small amount of luggage. The term originated in the 1970s when the first motorized tricycles appeared in India. The word itself is a combination of “auto,” short for automobile, and “rickshaw,” the earlier human‑powered tricycle.

The early models used motorcycle engines and were crudely built, but from the 1980s onward, modern autorickshaws incorporated more powerful gasoline or compressed‑natural‑gas engines, better suspension and safety features such as seat belts and turning indicators. In many Asian and African cities they are the primary means of revenue for former rickshaw pullers, providing a low‑cost, flexible mode of transportation.

Autorickshaws operate under a variety of licensing regimes. In India they are subject to municipal taxation, motor vehicle insurance and must carry an inspection sticker. Regulations also mandate compliance with emission standards, which has prompted some fleets to switch to CNG or electric powertrains. In countries such as Indonesia, Bangladesh and Nepal, the vehicles are often privately owned and operated in a predominantly informal sector, where regulations are less stringent.

From a mobility perspective, autorickshaws are valued for their manoeuvrability in congested streets and their ability to serve short‑haul trips that are too large for bicycles or small motorbikes. They contribute to local economies, offer flexible routes and reduce traffic congestion by providing a cheaper alternative to buses. Critics point to safety hazards; pilots are often at risk in collisions, and many crossings lack dedicated facilities. Many cities have therefore introduced dedicated lanes or “autorickshaw” zones to improve safety and reduce traffic disruption.

The impact of autorickshaws continues to evolve with urban transport policy, technology advancement, and environmental concerns. While the classic petrol‑powered tricycle remains a staple of many cityscapes, the shift toward cleaner fuels and electric models signals a potential future in which the autorickshaw persists as a pragmatic urban mobility solution, adapted to stricter safety and environmental standards.
