Autorickshaws, also known as auto rickshaws or tuk-tuks, are three-wheeled motorized vehicles designed for short-distance passenger transport in urban and peri-urban areas. They typically carry two to four passengers in a compact cabin behind the driver and are powered by small internal combustion engines or electric motors. Most autos have a single front wheel for steering and two rear wheels, with a roof and either fully or partially enclosed sides. They are valued for their maneuverability, low operating costs, and ability to navigate congested streets.

Regional use and variants vary widely. Autorickshaws are especially common in South Asia, Southeast Asia, parts of Africa and Latin America, where they provide flexible, affordable urban mobility that complements larger transit modes. Variants include passenger autos and goods-c carrying versions used for small-scale cargo. In many markets, fleets are regulated through licensing, permits, or fleet management schemes to control supply, fare structures, and safety standards.

Recent developments include the rise of electric auto rickshaws (e-rickshaws), which have expanded in many cities as a means to reduce emissions and fuel costs. Electric variants face challenges such as battery cost, range, charging infrastructure, and maintenance, but are increasingly supported by government incentives and urban air-quality goals.

Regulation and safety concerns encompass licensing requirements, vehicle inspection, driver training, insurance, and traffic safety. Critics point to rider exposure, road space competition with other vehicles, and emissions, while supporters emphasize low-cost local transit, job creation, and practical last-mile connectivity. The term tuk-tuk is common in parts of Southeast Asia, whereas auto rickshaw is widely used in South Asia and Africa.
